2023 Update

Summary (2023)

As we finished 2023 I thought I should post a quick update, mostly to remind myself what happened in the year.

In the first few days of 2023 I turned up the Adelaide server and it’s now the busiest of them all. Also in January 2023 the adfilter.net servers were added to several public lists of DNS servers, including the list that drives the entries in the DNSCloak app.

During the middle of the year there was some periods of instability in Adguard that settled down over the last months of the year in newer releases.

In June the AdGuard browsing security service decided to block one of the biggest AU banks, I put in a whitelist entry to bypass that until it was fixed.

Several times over the year I heard from users via email which was nice!

I ended 2023 with 3 servers (SYD/ADL/PER) online, with the following stats:

  • 625M DNS queries being served (rolling 30 days)
  • 1.4TB of outbound data (rolling 30 days)
  • 91 percent of DNS queries served from Adguard’s cache
  • 8 percent of all DNS queries were blocked by ad/malware filters
  • Average processing time 17ms, including queries that were not cached

Future (2024)

A couple of items that I have on my “things I’m thinking about” list are:

  • Opening up port 53 in AU for those folk who can’t do DOH/DOT
  • Approaching providers to sponsor some more locations in AU
  • Expanding to add servers outside of AU

We’ll see what 2024 brings!
